There was plenty to think about after I graduated from Girard College.I was a student there from 1969 until 1980 and had my share of hard knocks while attending school. Incidents of racism, fights ,substance abuse, and sexual misbehavior occurred within the student body during the desegregation years. I got into fights. I won some, lost some, and I bled. I guess everybody bleeds at some point while growing up. The years past by slowly and I survived the 1970s. Only 26 students graduated from our class on June 12th, 1980. Numerous classmates left the school for any number of reasons over the years. I was smiling while walking down the center aisle of the Chapel to get my diploma although the stitches in my stomach from a recent appendectomy were still hurting. I left the "City Of Botherly Love" forever and flew out with my life and a pink scar on my belly heading for the Sunshine State. I ended up in Key West and enrolled at Florida Keys Community College in August. I graduated from there in May 1982 with my Associate in the Arts Degree before transferring to the University of Florida. THE KEYS TO FOUNDER'S HALL is about my life at Girard College during the desegregation years and how I found my peace after graduation in the Florida Keys.
